Oil meters, energy meters, water meters, Internet-of-Things and smart metering

Tens of thousands of sensors are already connected in Dalarna. Now the exciting part begins. Maybe 13 November?

Dalarnas samverkansträff

What if a water pipe could alert you to a leak? If a building could tell you it was wasting energy? Or if a sensor in the middle of a forest could monitor something that previously required a physical visit? Science fiction? Hardly. The technology already exists – and tens of thousands of meters and sensors are already connected across Dalarna, Sweden. But according to IoT specialist Ambiductor, we have barely scratched the surface of what is possible.

We connect our phones, cars, watches and even our coffee machines to the internet. So why stop there?

Why not connect water wells, district heating networks, industrial facilities, buildings, farms and everything else that could benefit from being a little smarter?

That is precisely the question Ambiductor wants to raise when the company exhibits at Dalarna Science Park’s IoT collaboration event on 13 November.

And it has a point. While many still talk about the Internet of Things (IoT) as a technology of the future, tens of thousands of connected meters and sensors are already operating across Dalarna.

In other words, the future has already arrived. It just hasn’t made much noise about it.

We’re already measuring a lot. But think about everything we’re NOT measuring.

Behind many connected devices is a technology called LoRaWAN. The name itself might not get your heart racing, but the possibilities should.

LoRaWAN makes it possible for small, battery-powered sensors to communicate wirelessly over long distances while consuming very little energy. In many applications, a sensor can operate for years on a single battery.

This means we can suddenly collect information from places where measuring things used to be too complicated, expensive or impractical.

A well can report rising water levels. A building can reveal unnecessary energy consumption. A sensor can detect a water leak before anyone even notices a problem.

And that is just the beginning.

"What's exciting isn't simply that we can connect a sensor. It's what happens when we start using the information it provides. We already have tens of thousands of connected meters and sensors in Dalarna, but the same technology could be used for so much more. The possibilities are almost limited only by our imagination"

says Anneli Lundahl, head of sales at Ambiductor

The smartest solution might be one nobody has thought of yet

IoT doesn't have to mean complicated systems, enormous investments or massive digitalisation projects.

Sometimes, it is simply about getting an answer to a straightforward question.

Is the door open or closed? Is the tank full or empty? Is the temperature too high? Does someone really need to travel there just to check?

These details might seem trivial, but in the right context, they can save significant amounts of time, money, energy and resources.

And the possibilities extend far beyond traditional metering.

Imagine smarter snow removal. More efficient waste collection. Better monitoring of critical infrastructure. Improved control over water consumption. Or entirely new services that nobody has invented yet.

“Many people still think IoT is something for technology experts. But you don't actually need to understand how the technology works to recognise its value. You just need a problem you want to solve. We can help with the rest”

says Anneli Lundahl, head of sales at Ambiductor

Dalarna could become a showcase for smarter IoT solutions

With tens of thousands of connected devices already in operation, the region has substantial practical experience with the technology. This provides a strong foundation for exploring new applications.

For Ambiductor, the next step isn't simply about connecting more meters. It's about helping more organisations discover what connected technology can actually do for them.

Municipalities, property owners, industrial companies, energy providers and entrepreneurs all face challenges that could be addressed through smarter data and better insights.

And sometimes, a single small sensor can make a surprisingly big difference.

“We want to challenge people to think bigger. What would happen if you knew exactly what was going on in your facility, building or operation without having to be physically present? What could you do differently? That's where the really interesting ideas begin”

says Anneli Lundahl, head of sales at Ambiductor

Bring us a problem. Leave with an idea.

When Ambiductor exhibits at Dalarna Science Park's IoT event on 13 November, the goal is about more than showcasing products.

It's about starting conversations.

It's about bringing people from different industries together and helping them discover that they may have more in common than they think. A solution used for water metering might also solve a problem in industry, forestry or property management.

Above all, it's about showing that IoT doesn't have to be complicated.

“We hope people will come and challenge us. Tell us about something you'd like to keep a closer eye on. Something that takes up unnecessary time, costs money or is simply frustrating. There may well be a smart solution that's easier than you think”

säger Anneli Lundahl, säljansvarig på Ambiductor

Because if tens of thousands of meters and sensors are already connected across Dalarna, perhaps the most exciting question isn't what we're measuring today.

It's what we'll be measuring tomorrow.
